Objects & Items
Various objects and items assist Mario on his quest to explore the galaxies. Many old favorites, such as the ? block and Super Mushroom, have finally made their 3D debuts. Other items, such as star chips, are new to the series.

Transformation Powerups >>

Launch Star
Launch stars propel Mario to another planet in a level so he can advance in his quest. Launch stars are often broken and require assembly by collecting five star chips. Once near a launch star, shake the Wii Remote to activate it.
Pull Star
A pull star radiates a certain gravitational force that Mario can hook onto. When the glove icon appears on screen, pressing A draws Mario towards the Pull Star, while pressing A again releases him. As with Launch Stars, Pull Stars are often broken into five pieces.
Warp Pipe
A classic gameplay element from Super Mario Bros., a warp pipe instantly transports Mario to another location. It may be an underground grotto, or an entire new area of the galaxy.
? Block
A classic Mario item, the question block may contain coins, star bits, and other prizes. Jump underneath it to break it open and collect its goodies.
Brick Block
Brick blocks are breakable by jumping into it from below or with a spin attack.
Unbreakable Block
Unlike Brick Blocks, these solid blocks cannot be broken.
Flipswitch Panel
These blue panels turn yellow when Mario walks over it, and reverts to blue when Mario walks over it again. Some levels like the Flipswitch Galaxy require Mario to turn a whole sheet of panels into yellow to receive a Power Star.
Lever Switch
A switch that can be activated by performing a spin attack near it.
Ground Pound Switch
A switch that can be activated by performing a ground pound into it.
Sproutle Vine
Sproutle vines launch Mario to new locations. Shaking the Wii Remote causes Mario to climb the vine and finally swing off the end.
Cannon
From Super Mario 64, Mario can jump inside a cannon and fire at a desired target to launch himself to distant, otherwise inaccessible areas.
Bubble
Bubbles allow Mario to float across dangerous swamps and through the air. They are obviously fragile, and break when Mario touches a hazard. Pressing A blows air towards the bubble to move it in the desired direction.
Rolling Ball
Rolling Balls aid Mario in the Rolling Green and Rolling Gizmo Galaxies, where Mario must roll on them Super Monkey Ball-style. They contain Power Stars which cannot be unlocked unless Mario has rolled the balls into the goals. While on top of the ball, tilting the Wii Remote moves it, while pressing A causes Mario to jump.
Ray
Ray enables Mario to surf Loopdeeloop Galaxy and other water slide levels. By pressing A while on Ray, Mario moves forward, and tilting the Wii Remote left and right makes Ray turn. Shaking the Remote causes Ray to jump.
Sling Pod
Sling Pods fling Mario across voids in space. After Mario gets into a Sling Pod, hold the A button while pulling it back, then press A again for the Pod to release Mario in the opposite direction.
? Coin
? Coins do different things. Sometimes, collecting one causes a trail of Star Bits to be created. Other times, they cause a string of music notes to appear, and Mario earns a 1-up mushroom by collecting all of them.
Coin
The classic Mario coin. Each one refills one unit of health on Mario's life meter. Collecting 50 of them earns Mario an extra life.
Green Shell
Green Shells can be thrown at treasure chests to break them open or at enemies to defeat them. Holding a Green Shell while underwater enables Mario to swim faster.
Red Shell
Red Shells have similar functionality to the Green Shell.
1-up Mushroom
From Super Mario Bros., each green mushroom gives Mario an extra life. Once all lives are lost, Mario gets a game over.
Life Mushroom
Doubles Mario's life meter to 6 units instead of 3. If Mario's HP drops below 4 units, he can no longer recover the lost health.
Star Bit
Similar to coins, except they can also be fed to Lumas to unlock new levels or aimed at enemies as projectiles. Collecting 50 of them earns Mario an extra life.
Launch Star Chip
A new item introduced in Mario Galaxy, Mario must collect five of these to form a Launch Star, which enables him to reach the next part of a level.
Pull Star Chip
As with Launch Star chips, Mario must collect five of these to reassemble a Pull Star.
Silver Star
From Super Mario 64 DS, collecting five silver stars yields a Power Star. They follow Mario around, and when Mario takes damage, he loses one of them and must recover it.
Power Star
Introduced in Super Mario 64, each Power Star restores power to the Comet Observatory. They act as level exits: collecting a star returns Mario to the observatory hub. Every galaxy has a star entry requirement, which increases as you progress further into the game. There are a total of 121 Power Stars, several of which are Grand Stars and other types of special stars.
Grand Star
A special type of Power Star that is obtained by defeating the boss of a Grand Galaxy (world). It unlocks an observatory dome leading to a new Grand Galaxy. There are seven Grand Stars in all.
